Description:

possibly 16th century
69 x 57, der Rahmen 101 x 146 cm
The Judas Kiss. Crucifixion of Christ. Two panels made of softwood, the figures in relief possibly linden and worked separately. Partly shortened on the sides and fitted into a large, ebonized wooden frame. The polychromy later (19th century) and worn with remnants of old polychromy. Damages due to age and restorations.
Property of a Thuringian noble family.
The reliefs show strong influences from paintings and graphic works by Michael Wolgemut (1434-1519), among others. The painting "The Kiss of Judas" from the workshop of Michael Wolgemut (1434-1519) was designed for the high altar of the town church in Schwabach (around 1506/1508), the relief panel shows very similar combinations of figures.
